Theatre and Performing Arts

About

An introduction to careers in theatre and performing arts.

Did you know? The West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child uses over 160 people per performance, including 40 actors, 60 backstage crew, and dozens of technicians managing lighting, special effects, and illusions.

The UK’s performing arts sector supports approximately 244k jobs and is powered by a highly skilled and adaptable workforce, generating a total turnover of £4.4billion (according to research published by SOLT & UK Theatre in 2024). The sector offers a diverse range of exciting careers.

Who is it for?

The theatre industry is not just for performers! It is home to a diverse and talented range of individuals and skills including writers, scenic artists, costume makers, technicians, stage managers, front of house teams, marketers, community engagement teams and much more.

How much can I earn?

Salaries range from minimum wage for roles like Front of House or Stage Door, up to £100k+ for Artistic or Executive Directors. Freelancers Make Theatre Work (FMTW) and other sector analysts, estimate that approximately 70% of the workforce in the UK theatre (and performing-arts) industry is freelance or self-employed. Freelance fees vary depending on what role you’re in, from £573 per week as a performer, to up £500 per day for large scale Producers.

How to get started?

There is no set route for entering the sector and it depends on the area you’re interested in. For anyone keen on pursuing a career in performing arts, one of the best ways to get an overview of the different areas is to join a local theatre group or youth theatre where you will get an opportunity to see what it takes to stage a show. Most theatres run a community engagement programme and some often have backstage tours where you can find out more about the technical elements of productions.

The Get Into Theatre website provides a great resource for anyone wanting to get started in the industry and signposts to all of the funding, training or experience opportunities from across the UK in one space.
