An introduction to careers in advertising and marketing

“I am immensely proud to be part of the advertising industry. This is a place where we use creativity to create genuine value for our clients, shape culture and contribute to the wider UK economy. I am privileged to walk through the doors of BBH every day and know that I will see brilliant work that doesn’t just sell products; it has the power to spark conversations and drive real change. It could be work that helps create a more sustainable future, a campaign that changes behaviour and saves lives, or a piece of art that simply improves someone’s day by making them laugh. Our industry is filled with talented, passionate, and interesting people who are obsessed with what they do. Why wouldn’t you want to be part of that?”

Karen Martin, Chief Executive Officer at BBH London & Dublin, IPA President, Board Member of Advertising Association

The advertising industry makes a significant contribution to the UK economy, with £6 of value generated for every £1 spent on an ad campaign, generating £109 billion of GVA for the UK economy, supporting 5% of UK jobs, selling £18 billion worth of exports.

There are various types of advertising, from traditional such as the ads you see/hear on TV, at the cinema, on the radio or on giant billboards, to sponsorship like the brands you see across football shirts and stadiums, to influencers, experiential and much more.
