Overview
LCCM ran it’s bi-annual Careers Day as part of Discover! Creative Careers Month in partnership with UK Music to support young people and the LCCM community across current students and Alumni in pursuing successful creative careers.
The event featured a full day of programming including an industry panel in partnership with U.K Music with guests from a variety of roles across labels, management, production and composition. The panel discussed how they got into their roles and what they look for when hiring. There was also a CV workshop with top recruiter BIY People & Talent, plus the chance to have professional headshots taken with a photographer for their online profiles.
A music feedback session with Universal Music and award-winning songwriter and Chair of the Ivors Academy, ended the day alongside an industry careers fair where students and alumni were encouraged to meet companies, discuss their careers and learn more about open roles.
The careers fair had a range of companies in attendance from DAACI and MN2S through to Rocksteady, WEARE8, Musicians Union and We Are Event People.
Number of young people reached: 160+
Advice for similar companies/organisations
Plan ahead and keep your event varied with different engaging and interactive sessions throughout the day. Students already sit in classes or lectures for much of their day so creating something different will help the event stand out and have a greater impact on them when they come to make those big decisions on whether to pursue the creative industries or what type of role they want to go for on graduating higher education.
Can you tell us why you believe it’s important for industry to get directly involved in inspiring and informing young people about careers in the creative industries through projects like Discover?
The creative industries are extremely practical and fast changing so having fresh and current perspectives while also getting young people involved with industry figures is crucial. This supports them making the right choices on where to study but also about breaking into and sustaining a career in what is a highly competitive industry.
