Advice for similar companies/organisations
Start small if you need to and build up the offer over a few years. You can do anything from a half day session within a school, to hosting students at your studio for a day. Make sure there is a good balance of theoretical and practical activities so people feel totally engaged and part of the session.
We’re super proud to be involved. It’s hugely rewarding for a design team or business to support the initiative. I’d encourage companies to be proactive – if there’s a school or college you know, particularly in the priority areas, get on the front foot and reach out to them.
Can you tell us why you believe it’s important for industry to get directly involved in inspiring and informing young people about careers in the creative industries through projects like Discover?
Make a difference in young people's lives by getting them excited about design! The reality is that they have very few opportunities to experience what it's like working in the creative sectors. They are also unsure how to go about getting advice, work experience of placements.
We found that it's hugely energising for both sides, and the tutors too.
Testimonial:
“The recent graphic design workshop hosted by Mark Baxter from BAGGI was a valuable experience for Strode’s College students. The session was tailored perfectly for A level students, offering a balanced blend of foundational concepts and practical application.
The content was both informative and engaging; the workshop covered a wide range of essential topics. The presenters, Mark and Anita, were incredibly knowledgeable and delivered the material with clarity and enthusiasm. Their ability to break down complex ideas into easily digestible segments worked well with the students.
The concepts and ideas discussed were challenging enough to push students' creative boundaries, yet achievable for those with varying levels of experience. The guidance provided by the presenters ensured that everyone could complete the tasks successfully.
Overall, the workshop was a very useful learning experience. It not only equipped students with skills they can use in their personal projects but also ignited their interest in the industry by giving a comprehensive overview of the different roles within the graphic communication sector. We highly recommend this workshop to any student looking to enhance their design abilities.”
